In an unexpected turn of events in the entertainment industry, Jonathan Bailey, known for his role as Fiyero in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical “Wicked,” found himself in a unique position during the recent SAG-AFTRA strike. The production of “Wicked,” directed by Jon M. Chu and featuring stars like Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, was nearing the end of its principal photography when the strike necessitated a shutdown of most of the production activities. However, Bailey, a member of the British actors’ union Equity, was able to continue filming under these unusual circumstances.

Bailey’s experience was markedly different from the typical filming process. He recalls working with stand-ins wearing wigs instead of his usual co-stars, creating a slightly surreal atmosphere on set. This deviation from the norm was necessitated by the absence of the main cast, who were unable to participate in the filming due to the strike’s regulations.

The situation presented both challenges and opportunities for Bailey. On one hand, the absence of his fellow actors meant he had to adapt to working with stand-ins, impacting the dynamic and energy typically found on set. On the other hand, it provided him with a unique experience and the chance to focus on his character’s development in a more isolated environment.

This scenario underscores the complexities and unforeseen circumstances that can arise in the film industry, particularly during times of industrial action. Bailey’s ability to continue filming, thanks to his membership in a different union, highlights the intricate web of rules and affiliations that govern the industry. It also raises questions about the solidarity and division within the acting community during strikes.

Overall, Jonathan Bailey’s experience during the actors’ strike while filming “Wicked” provides a fascinating glimpse into the challenges and adaptability required in the film industry. His story is a testament to the unpredictable nature of film production and the resilience of actors in the face of industry-wide disruptions.
