Ever since the acclaimed Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) series WandaVision first appeared on Disney+, it remains one of the most outstanding offerings the platform has aired. Subsequent Marvel shows didn’t quite hit the mark or garner as much acclaim, leaving Wanda Maximoff’s story a shining star in the MCU firmament. Plans for a follow-up season were quickly dismissed, as the narrative arc of the debut season found its resolution. Its story would continue, however, in the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness movie.
Despite its brevity, WandaVision successfully bridged connections with other MCU franchises and introduced new characters to the Marvel fandom. One of these new additions was the enchanting yet mischievous witch Agatha, brought to life by the humorous and highly skilled Kathryn Hahn. Emerging as a foil to Wanda’s quest for domestic bliss, Agatha quickly demonstrated her worthiness of a standalone series, becoming the choice for a spinoff instead of a second WandaVision season.
Agatha’s spinoff, titled “Agatha: Coven of Chaos,” promises to share a number of similarities with WandaVision, as hinted by a recent revelation from a well-known guest star from the original series. It suggests the two series might share more commonalities than viewers initially anticipated.
Who’s Returning, and Why Does It Matter?
Intriguing news for WandaVision fans: Debra Jo Rupp, affectionately known as Kitty from That ’70s Show, has confirmed she’s on board for the second season of WandaVision. Based on her statement, it appears “Agatha: Coven of Chaos” is set to function as a sequel to Wanda Maximoff’s tale. While the specifics are still being hammered out and commercial considerations will play a crucial role in finalizing the appropriate title, the narrative continuity and Agatha’s central role in it are well-established.
In WandaVision, Rupp played a brief yet impactful role as Sharon Davis (aka Mrs. Hart), the wife of Vision’s boss who visits the couple for dinner in an episode reminiscent of the classic “I Love Lucy.” This role was vital in disrupting the sitcom norms of the series, setting its tone and providing a glimpse of what was to follow. Rupp masterfully blended humor and tension at a pivotal point in the series’ first episode.
The return of Rupp offers some clues about the likely setting and narrative direction for this upcoming season/spinoff. Primarily, it suggests that Westview, New Jersey, may be the central locale for the unfolding story. In WandaVision, both Wanda and Agatha disguised their true witch identities and integrated into suburban life, with Mrs. Hart and others unsuspectingly under their influence. If Agatha indeed becomes the show’s focal point, Westview may once again succumb to her magical powers, inciting an intriguing narrative that will keep audiences engrossed throughout the season.
Further, the re-introduction of Westview could allow for an expanded backstory. Agatha alluded to a dark history of witch-hunting in WandaVision’s first season. The decision of both Agatha and Wanda to use Westview as a stage for their plans suggests the town may harbor more secrets than just a pleasant community and a haunting past.
Lastly, while it remains unconfirmed whether Rupp’s character will assume a more prominent role this time around, the positive response to Mrs. Hart’s portrayal in the first season may hint at an increased significance. While her character may not showcase supernatural powers or engage in high-action scenes, she could be integral to certain plot points in this new season or standalone series.
Will the WandaVision Blueprint be Recycled?
Rupp’s announcement provides further food for thought. Beyond dispelling rumors of a second WandaVision season, the actress hinted that this fresh installment might bear similarities to American Horror Story. Given the notorious secrecy surrounding Marvel’s upcoming projects, Rupp’s comparison is far from random. It not only hints at a possible shift in tone, but also suggests a continuation of the homage to classic TV shows.
In essence, different episodes might pay tribute to well-known horror series, thereby forming a narrative bridge between WandaVision and Agatha: Coven of Chaos. If the tribute continues, audiences can anticipate more references to iconic horror-pop culture, with shows such as The Twilight Zone, Goosebumps, or Bates Motel potentially serving as inspiration. Given the success WandaVision had in emulating the style of various sitcoms, it’s reasonable to expect a similar approach, but with a horror-oriented spin.
“Agatha: Coven of Chaos” is set to launch on Disney+ in 2024. With the wheels of production in motion and substantial filming already completed, there’s much to be revealed about the show. Stay tuned for updates, which will clarify if this is indeed WandaVision’s spiritual successor, masquerading as a separate series, and whether it will adhere to the winning formula of the original.
