Disney’s much-awaited live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid has washed ashore, capturing the hearts of movie enthusiasts worldwide. After navigating through box office waves, the musical marvel has dropped its anchor on digital platforms, letting fans relive the magic from the comfort of their homes. Directed by Rob Marshall and penned by David Magee, the film strikes a balance between modern reinvention and maintaining the essence of the original story.

In an enchanting scene, we witness Ariel, portrayed by Hailey Bailey, on land post her heroic act of rescuing Prince Eric. The bewitching glimpse lets us dive deep into Ariel’s wonderment about the terrestrial world, highlighting King Triton’s evident discomfort over her infatuation with the human realm. This snippet not only provides a sneak peek into the sinister motives of Melissa McCarthy’s portrayal of Ursula but also showcases Sebastian’s concerns and Scuttle’s quirky character. And with the enthralling musical sequences opening the narrative, the audience is left on the edge of their seats, eager for what’s next.

This modern rendition, with Bailey at the helm, has effortlessly rejuvenated various aspects from the iconic animated film. The aim? To resonate with today’s audience while gifting the seasoned fans a renewed vision of the story, all the while preserving the enchantment of the original. A striking modification is the portrayal of Ariel’s sisters as potential leaders, coupled with a poignant backstory involving their mother’s tragic demise at the hands of a human. Moreover, viewers should be on the lookout for an invigorating twist on Ariel and Eric’s bond. Complementing the narrative are three soulful compositions, courtesy of Broadway maestro, Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Far from detracting, these modifications elevate the narrative. Marshall’s visionary direction, intertwined with stellar performances, crafts characters that are not only more relatable but also reflect contemporary sentiments. This does not, however, eclipse the story’s timeless charm. Thanks to its diverse casting, the movie beckons viewers of all ages, promising a wholesome family entertainment.

Joining Bailey in this underwater odyssey are Jonah Hauer-King as Eric, Javier Bardem portraying King Triton, Noma Dumezweni as the regal Queen Selina, and Art Malik embodying Sir Grimsby. The voices behind our aquatic friends include Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, Jacob Tremblay giving life to Flounder, and Awkwafina voicing Scuttle. Embellishing the storyline further are Triton’s daughters, with a fresh identity for the film: Lorena Andrea as Perla, Simone Ashley voicing Indira, Karolina Conchet as Mala, Sienna King playing Tamika, Kajsa Mohammar channeling Karina, and Nathalie Sorrell portraying Caspia.
