In a recent interaction with Entertainment Weekly, Michael Chaves, the acclaimed director, opened up about the much-anticipated horror sequel, “The Nun 2,” and the thrilling return of actress Taissa Farmiga as Sister Irene to the popular Conjuring franchise.
Following on from Corin Hardy’s successful 2018 horror film, “The Nun,” the sequel is set to revitalize Farmiga’s character after her escape from the horrifying demon Valak in the first installment of “The Nun.”
Discussing what fans can anticipate from the character of Sister Irene in the sequel, Chaves detailed, “She’s leading an inconspicuous life in a convent located in Italy. After undergoing a traumatic ordeal, and a tremendous adventure, she now desires to lead a life dedicated to service.”
The demon Valak, who made his bone-chilling debut in the previous film as the Demon Nun, is slated to return in the sequel, continuing to haunt Sister Irene’s acquaintance Maurice, portrayed by Jonas Bloquet.
Elucidating on this, the director of “The Curse of La Llorona” stated, “Maurice has found himself in France, employed at a boarding school in the role of a handyman. He shares a close bond and a playful banter with a teacher at the school, signaling the onset of his maturity. That’s where our characters begin their journey. However, we are aware from the first movie that there’s a dreadful entity within him, that Valak is lurking inside him, and circumstances coax Irene back on this disastrous collision course with her old ally.”
Michael Chaves Reveals Storm Reid’s Character Details
During the conversation, Chaves also spoke about Storm Reid, the newest addition to the cast, who will be seen playing a character in the sequel which he describes as “a young novitiate, in a role very similar to what Taissa portrayed in the first film.”
In addition, he elaborated, “She is a nun under training and she is at a crossroads about whether to take her vows or not. She stands at this critical juncture in her life, and she gets swept along with Irene on this mission, on this chase, tracking down Maurice amidst these horrendous events unfolding.”
Returning to “The Nun 2” is also Bonnie Aarons, whom audiences first saw portraying the Demon Nun in the 2016 sequel to “The Conjuring,” directed by James Wan. She reprised this character later in “The Nun.”
Talking about Aaron’s spine-chilling portrayal, Chaves praised, “Bonnie is exceptional. She truly knows how to ramp up the fright factor and she does it with such ease. It’s not like she’s constantly immersed in this grim Nun persona; she’s not the Method Nun.”
Speaking about what more the audience can anticipate in the sequel, the filmmaker hinted, “The faceless nuns are making a return. They were a crowd favorite and became an integral part of the promotional campaign for the first film. They are indeed back in the sequel. I don’t want to reveal anything else [about them].”
To conclude the conversation, Chaves teased about “The Nun 2“‘s more significant link to the Conjuring universe.
“Any ardent fan who’s familiar with the timeline knows that this film is indeed a part of that chronology,” the filmmaker added. “There’s a multitude of cool elements in it. I’m eagerly awaiting its release so I can disclose all the small Easter eggs that we’ve subtly incorporated throughout the movie.”
The much-awaited horror sequel, “The Nun 2,” is slated for release in theaters on September 8th.
