Lately, Disney+ has a new reigning sensation, none other than the God of Mischief himself. Indeed, the premiere of Loki’s second season has attracted an astonishing 10.9 million views within its initial three days since its launch on October 5. Such captivating numbers have positioned Loki as the second-highest watched show this year on Disney+, as outlined by Deadline. Only The Mandalorian’s third season, which was unveiled in March, surpasses this figure.
The tradition of revealing viewership metrics is relatively recent for streaming platforms. In today’s digital-first world, Disney identifies a “view” based on the total stream time divided by the actual runtime of the content. This method is now also adopted by Netflix. As a noteworthy mention, Disney+ had previously shed light on Peter Sohn’s Elemental, which managed to garner a massive 26.4 million views within its opening four days.
The Unique Appeal of Loki on Disney+
It’s evident that the appeal for Loki is exceptional. During its inaugural season, the series quickly ascended to be Marvel’s crowning jewel on Disney+. A major driving force behind its success is the fact that it dives deep into the multiverse narrative, shedding light on intricate facets of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) that many viewers were eager to understand. Loki adeptly filled the void left by Avengers: Endgame and provided answers that weren’t available in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. These compelling elements, coupled with stellar performances by Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson (portraying Mobius), led Loki to be the pioneer MCU series to be renewed for a second season.
Now, with the unveiling of Season 2, audiences are pouring in with renewed enthusiasm. The culmination of Loki’s first season laid the groundwork, elucidating the origins of the entire multiverse narrative. Recollecting its debut in June 2021, the series magnetized close to 890k households, maintaining its momentum and shattering records throughout its journey. The warm reception to the second season’s initial episodes seems to hint at a promising future. To put things into perspective, Loki’s first season finale had garnered approximately 1.9 million viewers, solely within the U.S.
