Joe Locke, known for his captivating role in Netflix’s “Heartstopper,” is set to make his Broadway debut in the celebrated revival of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.” Locke will take on the role of Tobias Ragg, a pivotal character in this musical thriller. His journey to Broadway begins on January 31, 2024, marking a significant step in his burgeoning stage career.

Locke’s talent was first recognized in the professional theater sphere with his performance in Donmar Warehouse’s production of “The Trials” in 2022. This portrayal earned him the Best Professional Debut award at the 2023 What’sOnStage Awards, spotlighting his exceptional acting prowess. His transition from screen to stage showcases his versatile abilities as an actor.

The current Broadway production of “Sweeney Todd” started its run at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in February 2023. Directed by Thomas Kail, it has received critical acclaim, including eight 2023 Tony Awards nominations, securing wins in Best Lighting Design and Best Sound Design categories. The musical features a star-studded cast with Tony nominees and winners, including Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford, who will be succeeded by Tony winners Aaron Tveit and Sutton Foster in February 2024.

“Sweeney Todd,” with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Hugh Wheeler, is based on the play by Christopher Bond. It tells the dark tale of a barber seeking revenge against a corrupt judge and his subsequent descent into murder. The unsettling yet compelling narrative is further intensified by Locke’s addition to the cast, expected to bring a fresh dynamic to the show.

Fans of Joe Locke and musical theater enthusiasts alike are eagerly anticipating his Broadway debut, marking a new chapter in his flourishing artistic journey.
