Joe Locke, the rising star known for his portrayal of Charlie Spring in the hit Netflix series “Heartstopper,” is poised to make his Broadway debut, taking a significant leap in his acting career. Beginning January 31, 2024, Locke will grace the stage at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, stepping into the pivotal role of Tobias Ragg in the Tony Award-nominated revival of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.” This announcement has stirred excitement among theater enthusiasts and fans of Locke’s work alike.

“Sweeney Todd,” with its book by Hugh Wheeler and haunting score by Stephen Sondheim, presents a chilling narrative set in 19th-century London. The story revolves around the vengeful barber Todd and his macabre partnership with Mrs. Lovett, unfolding a tale of love, betrayal, and retribution. The current Broadway revival has been lauded for its dynamic cast, gripping performances, and impeccable production values, earning two Tony Awards in 2023.

Locke, who has quickly risen to fame with his nuanced performance in “Heartstopper” and is set to star in Disney+ and Marvel’s upcoming “Agatha: Darkhold Diaries,” brings a fresh perspective to the character of Tobias. His theatrical debut marks a new chapter in his burgeoning career, showcasing his versatility and talent in a new realm. Tobias, previously portrayed by Gaten Matarazzo, is a character that offers Locke an opportunity to display his acting prowess in a complex and demanding role.

The production, directed by Thomas Kail with music supervision by Alex Lacamoire, has been praised for its use of Jonathan Tunick’s full 26-piece orchestration, a homage to the 1979 original production. This revival’s design elements, including scenic design by Mimi Lien, costume design by Emilio Sosa, and lighting design by Natasha Katz, contribute to its immersive and evocative experience.

As Locke prepares to step onto the Broadway stage, he joins an esteemed group of performers. The current cast includes the likes of Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford, with Tony winners Aaron Tveit and Sutton Foster set to join the production in February 2024. The inclusion of Locke in this stellar lineup signifies a recognition of his talent and the potential for a remarkable performance in one of Broadway’s most iconic productions.

Joe Locke’s transition from screen to stage in “Sweeney Todd” is a development that fans and critics are watching with great interest. His upcoming Broadway debut not only signifies a milestone in his career but also adds a new dimension to the rich history of this beloved musical thriller. As Locke takes on this new challenge, he continues to cement his place as a versatile and compelling actor in the world of performing arts.
