As we move through the heart of 2023, gamers worldwide find themselves on the edge of their seats as beloved characters and gripping Five Nights at Freddy’s storylines transition from PCs and gaming consoles to silver screens. This thrilling transformation, once seen as a murky venture, is fast becoming a compelling reality, driven by the rising success of on-screen adaptations of revered video games.

HBO’s “The Last of Us” emerges as a paramount example, evoking a wave of positive feedback from die-hard franchise fans for its authenticity and faithfulness to the original narrative. This adaptation has lit the beacon of hope for gaming enthusiasts that such a feat is indeed achievable, and more importantly, it can be executed with perfection.

The financial triumph of “The Super Mario Brothers Movie” at the box office seems to have further cemented this belief. We’re now eyeing a promising horizon filled with numerous adaptations of our beloved video games coming to life. Upcoming projects include Peacock’s “Twisted Metal”, which promises a spine-chilling experience, and “Five Nights at Freddy’s“, set to plunge audiences into an abyss of horror this autumn.

“Five Nights at Freddy’s,” brought to life by Jason Blum’s Blumhouse, is based on the popular game series by Scott Cawthon. In an interview with Discussing Film (via Total Film), Blum discussed his enthusiasm for converting more video games into movies. Responding to the positive online response to the promotion of “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” Blum acknowledged, “Well, I think the right video games make great source material for movies.”

The producer further went on to compare the performance of “The Super Mario Brothers Movie,” expressing his aspirations for a similar outcome for his forthcoming venture. “I mean, you saw that even with [The Super Mario Bros. Movie]. It’s a different genre, but it was an amazingly successful movie,” Blum said. “I certainly hope that’s the case [with Five Nights at Freddy’s]. James [Wan] is actually a big gamer, and we have a games division of our company that we’ve been working on. I’m definitely looking forward to finding more games that are popular and that we could turn into horror movies.”

A Union With the New King of Horror

Blumhouse is currently preparing for a merger with Wan’s Atomic Monster, aptly dubbed as “the new king of horror.” This merger promises a relentless commitment to crafting thrilling, goosebumps-inducing narratives. When questioned about the merger’s status, Blum confirmed, “Our agreement is almost done. It’s almost official, so we’re both excited about that.”

This collaboration is not uncharted territory for the two production giants. Blum added, “It’s not new for us, you know? We collaborated on M3GAN, and we’ve collaborated on all these Insidious movies.” He gave a sneak peek into what fans can expect from this merger. “The results of our collaborations, I should say, have been very positive. So for the fans, I think the good news is, instead of one movie every couple of years, it’ll be [new movies] every year,” Blum tantalizingly teased. “Some movies will be more Atomic Monster, some movies will be more Blumhouse. But both of the company’s DNA will be in all of our movies. I think that will, ultimately, make for better movies for the fans and more of them.”

As we look forward to this fusion of two of horror’s powerhouses, you can catch the new trailer for “Five Nights at Freddy’s” below, before its theatrical and Peacock release on October 27.
