A revival of epic proportions seems to be brewing in the Marvel realm as Jennifer Garner is reportedly stepping back into the shoes of Elektra Natchios in Deadpool 3, nearly two decades after her initial portrayal. The latest entry in the offbeat anti-hero’s franchise appears to be stirring a pot of multiverse chaos, borrowing heavily from an array of films including Doctor Strange’s most recent sequel, The Flash, and even the Spider-Verse series from Sony Pictures. It seems no iconic character will be left untouched.
In a recent reveal by The Hollywood Reporter, the rumour mill churned out that Ben Affleck might make a cameo as his Daredevil rendition under the direction of Shawn Levy. Now, adding to the excitement, news has surfaced that Garner will be reprising her legendary role from the Marvel Comics Universe.
Garner’s Stint as Elektra: A Quick Throwback
Garner first breathed life into Elektra Natchios in 2003, sharing the screen with her then-spouse, Affleck, in Mark Steven Johnson’s directorial venture. The film’s reception, however, sparked a polarized discourse over the years. The actress reprised her role in the 2005 standalone film ‘Elektra,’ which, disappointingly, failed to create the anticipated stir.
Fast forward to recent years, fans were treated to a fresh rendition of the character in Netflix’s The Defenders universe. Elodie Yung took up the mantel of Elektra, sharing screen space with Charlie Cox’s Daredevil. She became a pivotal character in the crossovers featuring Cox’s hero with Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist.
Yung, having recently collaborated with Ryan Reynolds in the inaugural entry of The Hitman’s Bodyguard, might also join the Deadpool 3 cast. This expectation extends to Charlie Cox as well, given his recent incorporation into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and participation in notable projects like Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk. He’s also set to star in the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again.
Deadpool 3: A Satirical Take on Multiverse Films?
Since the advent of the Deadpool franchise, Reynolds’ Wade Wilson has exploited his character’s signature humor to satirize the various renditions of characters and storylines within the superhero world.
Deadpool 2 even incorporated a fleeting cameo from the main stars of the most recent X-Men movie series in Charles Xavier’s mansion. The specifics of Deadpool 3’s plot remain under wraps. Still, signs point towards the Merc with a Mouth acquiring Cable’s time travel device, subsequently catching the attention of the TVA.
To dodge repercussions, Wade strikes a bargain with the TVA to assist them in a multiverse-spanning mission, crossing paths with different iterations of Wolverine portrayed by Hugh Jackman, diverse X-Men actors from over the years, and potentially other superstar faces from the superhero genre.
With the rising popularity of time travel and multiverse concept in films, it’s hardly a surprise that Reynolds would want to incorporate this narrative in Deadpool 3, pushing the envelope further with unexpected, wild cameos designed to astonish the viewers.
Deadpool 3: A Star-Studded Marvel Universe Spectacle
Slated for a May 3, 2024 release, Deadpool 3 boasts an impressive ensemble cast. Karan Soni, Morena Baccarin, Leslie Uggams, Brianna Hildebrand, Rob Delaney, Emma Corrin, and Matthew Macfadyen join Reynolds in what promises to be another whirlwind cinematic experience. As the plot unravels and new details emerge, fans eagerly anticipate the film’s take on the multiverse concept and how their favorite characters, old and new, will fit into the grand scheme.
